The VW Atlas three-row SUV offers great seating and cargo space in a very affordable package. This is a great choice for families but also makes it a fun way to travel with friends or as a couple.

The Volkswagen Atlas is overdue for an update. However, it's still an attractive family SUV that's easy-to-drive and well-built. This model is available in a variety trim levels and features a wide range of technology features.

At the top of the list is the standard V6 engine that makes a fair amount of power, and a smooth eight-speed automatic transmission. It can't match its competitors in acceleration, but it will get to where you want it to with reasonable ease.

Although fuel economy is not the best, it's still better than the base SUVs from Honda or Kia. It can get 20 mpg inside the city and 25 on the highway. This isn't too bad.

The interior comfort is good, with a quiet cabin that's easy to use and decent quality controls. The third-row seats have enough leg and shoulder room for adults. Additionally, there is a reclining back seat with an ottoman that allows you to store items when you're on the go.

Many driver assistance technology are available and can be very useful. The standard Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert warn you when vehicles are close to your blind spots, and forward collision warning and autonomous emergency braking can help you avoid frontal crashes.

Although the infotainment system may not be as advanced as its competitors, it is intuitive and simple to use. You can use the head-up display or upgrade to a touchscreen and you have smartphone compatibility with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay.

Volkswagen considers safety a top priority, and the Atlas reflects this. The standard suite comprises a precollision braking system that detects pedestrians, an adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go function, and lane departure alert. You can also upgrade to a satnav or heads-up system with navigation.

You may need more power than the turbocharged four-cylinder 2.0-liter engine. This produces 269 HP and 273 lb-ft. This powerplant will come with both front and all-wheel drive. It can tow up to 5,000 pounds.

EPA ratings are 21/25 mpg when you have front-wheel drive and twenty/24 mpg when you have all-wheel driving. Although it's not the best-in-class rating for SUVs with four cylinder engines, this rating is still better than the EPA ratings.

Exterior Style

The Atlas is a tall and bulky SUV that has square shoulders. It looks more like a pickup truck than other full-size SUVs on the market, and it isn't as handsome as the Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade.

Price

The Atlas' starting MSRP is around $24,400 for a front-wheel-drive model with the standard 2.0-liter four-cylinder. You can find a V-6-powered model for about $1,650 more. An assortment of trims, options, and features allow you to customize your Atlas for any driving situation.
